BLENDING HUMAN TOUCH WITH TECH: WHY WE STILL NEED PEOPLE

The benefits of technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in delivering the promised efficiency, speed, and streamlined solutions are being touted everywhere. But, what about people, do they still have a role to play?
The more I have explored the frontiers of AI through tools like Chat GPT and pi.ai, the more I've come to realise that, while technology provides useful and powerful tools, the human touch remains irreplaceable.
Imagine a room where an executive team gathers to explore and understand their collective dynamics. I recall a session where a team delved into their Lumina Spark Collective profile. The energy in the room was electric as they engaged in a rich, hour-long discussion on team dynamics, gaining insights into how their team was perceived within the broader business landscape. This level of engagement and understanding blossomed naturally in a face-to-face setting, something that a digital interface could not replicate.
Technology has also made strides in team development. Virtual team-building activities, online personality assessments, and collaboration tools have all contributed to enhancing team dynamics, especially in today's remote work environments. It's not about choosing between human facilitation and technology; it's about leveraging both for optimal results.
Another powerful experience unfolded while working with a group of leaders in an organisation striving for greater inclusivity. The in-person dialogue facilitated a paradigm shift among these leaders, from seeing themselves as lone wolves on individual learning journeys to a united pack of leaders capable of moving mountains together. This shift in collective mindset, fostered through human interaction, was a game-changer. It catalysed a drive towards a more inclusive culture, showcasing the transformative power of human facilitation.
In leadership development, technology is making significant contributions. Online leadership courses, webinars, and virtual reality simulations provide leaders with valuable tools for growth and self-awareness.
However, the core of leadership development remains rooted in human interaction, mentorship, and coaching.
Leadership and culture development are intertwined. Work psychologists facilitate a safe space where individuals feel comfortable to open up, sharing nuances of organisational culture that often remain veiled in routine surveys or daily interactions. The ability to collate this sensitive information and mirror it back to the organisation in a manner that sparks meaningful action is a hallmark of human facilitation. It’s a realm where the delicate human touch continues to reign supreme.
Nonetheless, technology has played an increasingly pivotal role in understanding and shaping organisational culture. Advanced sentiment analysis tools can sift through vast amounts of employee feedback data to uncover trends and sentiments that may go unnoticed. Moreover, culture assessment platforms provide valuable insights into the alignment of stated and experienced culture.
The synergy between tech tools and human expertise is a promising frontier. Tools like pi.ai offer a fantastic playground for practice. For instance, after a coaching workshop, managers can use it to hone their new skills in a safe space before applying them in real-life interactions. It’s a beautiful glimpse into how the fusion of tech and human expertise can usher in enriched outcomes in organisational development.
In the broader field of organisational development, technology is evolving rapidly. Learning management systems (LMS) are becoming increasingly sophisticated, allowing for personalised learning journeys. AI-driven analytics can identify skill gaps and recommend targeted training.
So, the question I often ask now is how do you generate more positive change by blending the best of Artificial Intelligence with Compassionate Humanity and the Human Touch?
The narrative of AI and technology in organisational development is exhilarating, opening doors to uncharted territories. However, as we ride the exhilarating wave of technological advancement, let’s not lose sight of the human expertise that makes the journey not just successful, but also deeply meaningful and effective.
